Celebrating NAEYC’s Week of the Young Child™

NAEYC’s annual Week of the Young Child™ (April 8-12) gives you the chance to celebrate young children – and gives us the chance to celebrate YOU! During this week (and every week!) we’re so grateful to you for supporting and caring for our youngest learners and their families.

We hope you’ll incorporate some of these experiences and activities into your week. So let’s have some fun, and get cooking, tasting, singing, creating—and celebrating!

Music Monday

  • Infants, Toddlers & Twos
Engage young infants in music experiences by providing wrist and ankle bells to hold! Watch their expressions as they make music with their movements. Learn more in Chapter 14 of The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers & Twos, Volume 2.
  • Preschool
Connect literacy with music experiences by adding books of children’s favorite songs and fingerplays to the Library area! As you point to the words, encourage children to dance and sing along! Learn more in Chapter 8 of The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool, Six Edition, Volume 2.

Tasty Tuesday

  • Infants, Toddlers & Twos
Engage your youngest learners in creating their own meals! Allow them the opportunity to shake the cinnamon on top of their applesauce or pour the milk into their cereal bowl. Learn more in Chapter 16 of The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers & Twos, Volume 2.
  • Preschool
Not able to provide separate cooking experiences in your program? Turn lunch time into the experience! Have children write or draw the menu for the day and have discussions about the flavors of the food and the number of items on their plates! Learn more in Chapter 9 of The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool, Sixth Edition, Volume 2.

Work Together Wednesday

  • Infants, Toddlers & Twos
Provide mobile infants and toddlers with foam or cloth covered blocks. Model how to stack the blocks and encourage children to watch what others around them are building. Learn more in Chapter 16 of The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers & Twos, Volume 2.
  • Preschool
Extend building experiences into the Sand and Water interest area. Provide materials and encourage children to work together to construct a sand village! Help children navigate assigning roles and working together! Learn more in Chapter 7 of The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool, Sixth Edition, Volume 2.

Artsy Thursday

  • Infants, Toddlers & Twos
For young infants, start with sensory experiences that will become the foundation for later art experiences. Provide infants with materials with a variety of textures, such as fabric strips. Watch to see which texture catches their attention! Learn more in Chapter 15 of The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers & Twos, Volume 2.
  • Preschool
Encourage children to explore 3-D art and woodworking experiences. Provide children with golf tees, drywall screws, hammers, screwdrivers, and either layered cardboard or polystyrene foam sheets. Extend the experience to target math skills as you measure their final creations! Learn more in Chapter 4 of The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool, Sixth Edition, Volume 2.

Family Friday

  • Infants, Toddlers & Twos
Families can share a wealth of information about their children’s routines and preferences. Collect this information in a Family Information Form and use it to guide your daily and weekly planning. Learn more in Chapter 5 of The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers & Twos, Volume 1.
  • Preschool
Invite families into your classroom! Provide them with meaningful experiences to engage in with children. Place an adult-sized chair in the Library area, or place signs in each interest area with suggestions for how family members can interact with children. Learn more in Chapter 15 of The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool, Sixth Edition, Volume 1.
